FINALLY! A high quality FREE Firewall!
-------------------------------------
The probably greatest addition this week is ZoneAlert 2.0,
the first decent personal firewall that is free!
Not only will it "hide" your computer from any potential hackers that
scan for victims, it will also give you complete control over what
applications can access the Internet. It has a great easy to understand
interface and requires no networking experience or TCP/IP knowledge to
set up. If you are running Windows95, you could run into some snags
though, there are some reports of annoying "blue screen" errors,
however this is happens almost exclusively on some Win95 systems, they
are working on a solution... http://www.webattack.com/freeware/security/fwfirewall.shtml

Synchronize your Bookmarks
----------------------
BookmarkSync, it is a small software that works in conjunction with a
free service and synchronizes your bookmarks with a password protected
web page that you can access from any browser. Your private page is
nicely designed and easy to access. It's free! http://www.webattack.com/freeware/surfing/fwurlorg.shtml

Fast FTP uploads for webmasters
--------------------------------
"SendTo FTP" has been updated, a great tool for webmasters that let's
you do a quick upload from the "Send To" menu
without having to start your full FTP client. http://www.webattack.com/freeware/ftp/fwftp.shtml

Index and search web pages
--------------------------
"Surf Saver" is a very handy ad-supported freeware that let's you save
any web page or entire site into an internal database complete with
graphics and all. You can then search and browse that site offline or
search the entire database for keywords etc. SurfSaver can be accessed
from th IE toolbar or right click menu. http://www.webattack.com/freeware/surfing/fwoffline.shtml

Kaufmann Mail Warrior
---------------------
A recent Editor's Pick. Small e-mail client, great clean interface and
many features. For all those that don't like Outlook Express. This is
freeware with an optional
donation. Don't let it confuse you, there is no need to pay , ...unless
you really want to. http://www.webattack.com/freeware/comm/fwemclients.shtml

Serve it from your PC
----------------------
If you are looking for an easy to use FTP server to let people access
your local PC, check out "Tyson FTP Server"
It's really easy to use, you can set up individual accounts and
passwords and specify which folders each user has access to. Small
download and runs in the tray. http://www.webattack.com/freeware/server/fwftpserver.shtml

Link of the Week
======================================================
This weeks link is a rather strange place on the web.
If you are easily scared, I would not recommend visiting it.
It's an online "Freak Show" -a virtual museum of oddities.
You will find some pretty strange pictures. Examples are

This is from Steve Gibson's page:
-quote-
Internet Connection Security for Windows Users
by Steve Gibson, Gibson Research Corporation
ZoneAlarm 2.0.xx Status:
ZoneAlarm 2.0 was recently released by ZoneLabs (on January 26th, 2000).

Due to the fact that the product's concept is "just right" and that it's 100% free for individual use, downloads have taken off like a rocket! This has slowed down ZoneLabs' web servers, delayed their ability to respond to eMail questions and technical support, and has exposed this still "wet behind the ears" brand new product to an overwhelming world-wide audience.

It is my FIRM belief that ZoneAlarm 2.0 has the potential to become the PERFECT FIREWALL for the typical security conscious Internet user.

I believe this because ZoneAlarm 2.0 provides a very good, "highly paranoid" firewall for blocking unrequested inbound traffic and provides an effective, state-of-the-art, outbound application blocker. For the typical individual, "spyware applications" running inside our own machines represent a much greater danger to personal privacy than external hacking attacks. Bad guys are still out there, absolutely . . . but who knows exactly what the programs running inside our own machines are doing while we're connected to the Internet? If they choose to "phone home" (and many do without telling us!) what's to stop them? The answer is ZoneAlarm 2.0.

(I should probably mention that I have never felt the need to use ANY of the firewalls I've reviewed on the ShieldsUP! site. Since my entire network is protected by a big industrial strength firewall, there never seemed to be any point. But I'm running ZoneAlarm 2.0 on my machine right now because the outbound protection it offers is without peer. ZoneAlarm 2.0 does what no other firewall ever has. It's THAT important!)

Since I really believe that ZoneAlarm 2.0 changes everything, I will be "making my case" in full on the main ShieldsUP! site once ZoneLabs has shaken the first release bugs out of this brand new product. But I am unwilling to do that until these initial-release problems have been discovered and resolved.

Therefore, I invite you to jump in and join us and get your feet wet with this important new product, and to participate in our online discussion to share your thoughts, feelings, and bugs! But if you choose to wait until the paint has dried and the dust has settled a bit, I certainly understand that too. In either case, please take a moment to glance over the following sections:

Why Am I so Excited?
The difference between ZoneAlarm and all other firewalls is that its primary focus is the prevention of the escape of information from inside our machines. By continuously monitoring the actions of every Internet-connected program running inside our machine, the ZoneAlarm firewall completely blocks unknown programs from connecting to the Internet. But ZoneAlarm's firewall goes further than this. Since it always knows exactly which programs are allowed to communicate, it also knows exactly which inbound traffic to expect and permit.

Thus, ZoneAlarm functions as a much smarter firewall than any traditional "rule-based" system ever could. It doesn't need low-level port, protocol, and IP address "rules" since it is able to operate at the higher trust-based application level. I consider this a much needed breakthrough in the field of personal Internet privacy management.
Known Bugs, Limitations & History
Below is a list of the strange behavior, bugs, and known limitations we've seen from the specified release of ZoneAlarm. I'll make an effort to keep this up to date, though it is not my intention to provide technical support for ZoneLabs. You must contact them with your reports of trouble so that they'll be informed and can track down and resolve any misbehavior.

PLEASE do not confuse ME with THEM! I want to know so that we can all know what's going on, but THEY need to know so it can get fixed!

support@zonelabs.com

Also, ZoneLabs is maintaining a FAQ page (Frequently Asked Questions) about ZoneAlarm. It contains a bunch of really useful info, so you should definitely famialiarize yourself with its contents!

Current Limitations:
ZoneAlarm (ZA) does not run on "multiple interface" machines performing Network Address Translation (NAT) or any form of packet routing. It can run on any machines behind a NAT or router, but cannot be used on the machine which is actually performing the packet transformation.

2.0.10 - Initial Release Problems:
Current problems are preceded by a red dot. Cured problems have a smily face and the incremental version that eliminated the trouble.

If you have visited this page before, please be sure to press your browser's REFRESH button to receive the latest version!

Also . . . as I look over this list on "Day 3 of ZoneAlarm", I can imagine that it could be rather frightening. So I should tell you that *I* am continuing to run ZoneAlarm with NO significant problems and that I know there are thousands of others who have never seen ANY of these problems. So, while the problems below ARE occurring to some people, the product is also working perfectly many others.

"More Information" URL truncation — When the firewall blocks an inbound packet, ZA pops up a dialog to offer more information. Pushing the "More Information" button sends a browser URL to ZoneLabs to request additional information. But the URL is insanely long since it contains the full specification of the event and is, for some reason, being truncated in the browser's address line. This prevents the ZoneLabs diagnostic from receiving the information it requires.
Spontaneous entries appearing in Programs list — Strange and unsolicited entries appear in the Programs list upon system startup. They can be readily deleted, but the same items, and others, will return after a restart. Some people report that EVERY program they run appears in this list ... even those that don't communicate. (My experience has been similar though not as extreme.)
Cured by v2.0.11: ICQ was not functioning at high security setting — This was the #1 trouble report during ZA's first day of life, so it received their first attention. It has been cured since Day 2 of "Zone Watch."
Large bulk transfers become slow — ZoneLabs has said that this is a problem they understand and will fix with the TrueVector engine underneath ZA. Apparently the TrueVector engine sucks up huge amounts of memory during large transfers (oops!) which it later gives back to the system. ZL (ZoneLabs) reports that they believe this is only happening with NNTP (news), but there "seem" to have been non-news reports as well. We'll have to see.
Many Critical Failures and Blue Screen's of Death (BSOD's) — There's no official word on this, but we all know it's bad! <<grin>> If it happens to you PLEASE record the various cryptic numbers and eMail this information, with the version of ZA you're using and your various system specs, to support@zonelabs.com. This is the only way for them to track these errors down and eliminate them!
Erroneous "Blocking" pop-ups — ZA seems to have some sort of bug where it pops up a notification of a blocked communication (which should not be blocked), then allows the communication to proceed. It's annoying and seems to happen to some people more than others.
NOT Cured by v2.0.13!!: Erroneous pop-ups occurring due to web advertisements —Blocked access pop-ups had been occurring when web ads were being served by load-balancing ad servers. Version 2.0.13 was reported to cure these problems, but MULTIPLE reports of them are continuing.
IRDP Solicitation Blocked when starting Outlook 5 — Several people running Microsoft Outlook Explorer 5 and Internet Explorer 5 have reported a blocking pop-up about a communication to 224.0.0.2, IRDP Solicitation, being blocked. We've also had related reports that "On every instance of connection to the Internet (dial up) I get the same notice from Zone Alarm: "The firewall has blocked Internet access to the all routers multicast address 224.0.0.2 (ICMP Router Solicit) from your computer". ZoneLabs knows about this and will be removing this annoying (and completely unnecessary) pop-up soon!
Internet servers blocked without report — No one seems to have been able to get their Internet servers to provide Internet service. Oops! I'm running several servers on my own machine, but they only provide local service, so I've not been able to confirm that ZA prevents local servers from being accessed by the external Internet. (But it's been reported many times.)

New information reveals a "starting order" problem. If the server is started as an application, it works, but not when started as a service. So the VSMON service underneath ZA needs to find a way of starting up earlier. (Armchair developer, Gibson, here!
Cured by v2.0.13: Time server access was blocked at Maximum setting — It had been necessary to reduce the security level to Medium in order to time server access through the SNTP protocol to be permitted. That's fixed now.
Application permissions are sometimes not remembered — No matter how many times you respond to an application communication request with "Allow Internet access" and "Remember next time", ZA doesn't remember and prompts the next time the application wants access.
Windows won't shutdown — When running WIN95 B, with NAV 5.0 and BlackICE Defender v1.8.6.11, the computer hangs and won't shutdown.
ZoneAlarm's TrueVector engine is not starting on boot. — It's necessary to stop and restart the ZoneAlarm UI in order to kick-start the TrueVector engine. This has been reported under NT Server 4/SP6a.
NetMeeting 3.01: Multiple confirmations of problems — When Netmeeting is started it pops up a message saying that it cannot start and then recommends restarting Windows and trying again at starting Netmeeting. If Windows is restarted, the problem is still there, and at all levels of ZA protection. If ZA is shut down, NetMeeting starts without trouble. In this case NetMeeting 3.01 (4.4.3385) is running on Win98SE over a DUN connection with all latest software versions and all maintenance applied.

Others report BSOD's with ZA at High Security and no operation at other settings, with or without allowing NM to "serve".
Breaks AltaVista Discovery 1.1 — This is the PC-based search tool from Compaq (Digital). AltaVista displays local search results using the local "self-reference" URL http://127.0.0.1:7654/blahblahblah and ZA doesn't seem to allow that. Disabling ZA and restarting AV corrects the problem.
Problems associated with starting and Stopping ZA — When ZA is running and Internet apps are started everything's OK. ZA asks if they can connect - or already knows they can - and the apps retrieve mail and news etc. But when ZA is closed for some reason and then started again, the icons for running apps are gone from it's GUI. Then the web browser and news reader, etc. are blocked from the Internet. The Net apps must be stopped and then started again when ZA is running for it to see them.
Cosmetic Problem — The "last program to access the internet" line in the "traffic" screen does not always show the last program that has accessed the internet. It is often blank but the line below it shows a time.
Security change lockup — For some people, when an application is not functioning it's necessary to close the application, change the security setting, and then re-open the application. If it's not done that way the system freezes, requiring a hard boot and giving no error messages.
Unnecessary Activity Logging!!!! — The question was raised: "I am curious if you know what the files do that Zone Alarm created in a new Windows subfolder called "Internet Logs." The files are IAMDB.RDB and OEMCOMPUTER.LDB. They are relatively small in size, but seem to increase a few KB every day. Are these logs which are tracking my internet usage and could compromise my privacy? Are the files necessary? What do they do and can either or both be deleted without removing my settings and preferences?" This turns out to NOT be a problem, bug, or unnecessary. Please see the ZoneLabs FAQ page for a discussion of the purpose for those files and their contents.
Incorrect and Non-Sticky Zone Determination — We're hearing variations on this a lot!: "I use a laptop and use a PCMCIA ethernet card to connect to a cable modem. Every time I boot, ZoneAlarm assumes that the card is for a LAN and it is therefore included in the local zone (security | advanced). If I uncheck it, it is checked again the next day. I believe the program should allow the user to choose the default for each and every adapter and have it stick (I use a token ring card at the office, and it also defaults to local zone). Gotta fix that!
Blocking after permission granted — When first using the CyberKit utility, communication is blocked after permission is given. After restarting Cyberkit every works correctly.

Did I miss anything? — If you have had any other problems not mentioned here, I want to know! (For everyone's sake.) Send a note to me at shieldsup@grc.com and we'll make sure it gets the attention it requires! (Be sure to also cc: support@zonelabs.com)

NOTE: YOU MUST NOT send questions to me at this address, I just can not answer a flood of individual questions to individual people. Instead, please post them on the shieldsup discussion forum so that everyone can see and share your question and my reply! Thank you!!

Privacy Concerns
Is there such a thing as a free lunch?
Many people have been concerned that ZoneAlarm is free, and have wondered whether it might not, itself, be very cleverly marketed advanced spyware. Then, on January 11th, gasoline was thrown on the fires of these concerns when ZoneLabs announced that their "TrueVector" technology had been licensed to Media Metrix, a company that provides "consumer profiling" services to major Internet media users. This caused an uproar as people wondered whether the "TrueVector" technology that also forms the foundation of ZoneAlarm might not be spying on them. In other words, "Who's watching the watchers?" !!

Since these are valid questions, which also initially concerned me greatly, I'll tell you what I know and now believe:

I'm absolutely certain that the ZoneLabs guys are good guys.
ZoneAlarm is the first application of their TrueVector technology. In the future they will probably be offering a non-free "pro" version which will offer more advanced features for people wanting detailed event logs, operation on NAT machines, more "granular" control over the ZA firewall, and so forth. But their main focus is upon the licensing of their underlying TrueVector technology (as they have with Media Metrix) and also upon the development of commercial "corporate scale" products.

I've read their TrueVector US patent cover-to-cover, so I know how much more their technology can do. In the future they will be offering a suite of powerful solutions to the corporate Internet user who needs to maintain security controls over their entire enterprise's operation.

So I ask you: How better to nail down every last nuance of their core technology's behavior and operation than to give it ultra-high volume exposure in the form of a technologically advanced free firewall for the masses? It is what I would do, and what I WILL do in the future, with my own work.

What about the evil Media Metrix?
Educate yourself as I did: Go take a look at the Media Metrix website.

What you'll see is that Media Metrix is to web surfing as the Nielson rating system is to television viewing. Just as a "Nielson Family" gets paid to have a special "set top box" continually monitoring their viewing habits, Media Metrix pays 50,000 web users to have special monitoring software installed in their computers so that their surfing habits and behavior can be monitored. The technology Media Metrix had been using was limited and troublesome. So, they turned to ZoneLabs' TrueVector technology to provide a mature solution for their knowingly monitored user's needs.

I see nothing wrong, nor the least bit evil or underhanded, in Media Metrix's use of the superior TrueVector technology, nor anything wrong with ZoneLabs making their core technology available to an above-board company like Media Metrix. It is specifically because of the financial support of the Media Metrix license that ZoneLabs can afford to make ZoneAlarm free to all of us, and specifically because of the data collected by Media Metrix (with the FULL KNOWLEDGE AND PAID PERMISSION of their sample user-base) that so many other free, advertiser-supported services are available to all of us on the web.
So, Yes . . . I'm excited!
I have my fingers firmly crossed that Zonelabs will be able to quickly nail down these remaining problems and completely clean up ZoneAlarm's behavior.

I believe that there's every chance that we'll soon have a solid personal firewall that's not only free, but also clearly superior to anything else ever created for the typical, individual, Internet user.

Stay tuned!

If you worry about that, that means you have no defence at all, and have not the slightest feeling about security. Read the recent posts about a good defence system for the average Hive poster, implement it on your system, and then come back.
This thread and a few more(+/- 10-15) in the Couch Forum.
Blundly said: just register, if that was all you had to worry about, that's your smallest one. And fill in some crap, but when they ask for a email address, give a real one, but not your Hushmail one. They can send you sometimes a pasword or such alike. thanks for the tip on the Firewall - Ive got it up and running now.. and it seems all good ran a few tests and it seems Im invisible...
OH Im on a win 95 machine for anyone that was put off by that.

just curious about one thing tho...
when I post a message I always assumed it recorded the IP address... and that all you Moderator type Pimp Bees could see it. Now of course everything hypothetical so it dosent really matter... But - even with this nice lil firewall up wont the IP still be logged? it will just mean that no one from the outside can look at you PC over the net...
or am I completly wrong (hey you know what - for once I wouldnt mind)

anyway - it will certainly deal with any of those little computer geek hacker wannabe's so thats all good

Even an Administrator (3 we have: Hey_man, Rhodium and Spitball), can't see IP nr's, only in extreme hack attack cases could they ask permission from Cystonic, the Software Guru far up there somewhere in the Lycaeum. He's quite busy with such a high traffic site as the Lycaeum, and we have to shout extremely hard most of the time, to get his attention. and yeah... I do know about proxies.. and your right im not using one.. but thats a personal choice... due to the fact that I use a university server... and the proxy logs the Ip of the person who loads the site first...
now I mean whether the account I use is mine or not is another matter but still the less thats stored about the things I do online the happier I am about it.

I remember reading somewhere in the Hive a sound piece of advice.. Dont post anything here you wouldnt want read by a police officer (or something to that affect) - SO even if my IP isnt logged Im still going to post with the belief that they know exactly who I am (altho I like to think I make it hard for them)
So once again thanks for the hookup with that firewall... its been running really nicely.. and has already blocked a few interesting (strange) requests - all external... at least it proved I knew what was running on my PC.

Without going into the delicious details, let's say it is always a good idea to use a proxy.
You know what scares me? The OUTGOING requests that zonealarm blocks on my computer. It'scary bees I tell you. And this on a computer which was completely reinstalled only a few days ago.

Osmium, and all, the outgoing programs are mostly easy to understand. If they are clicked from the programs Start menu, they will appear as new entries in your ZoneAlarm, or are loaded at startup in the system tray at the right hand bottom, with the clock in it.
But if they are suddenly asking access to the internet, and to pass the lock, then you should start thinking! Sometimes it's a normal behavior, like updating features, but four of them caught my attention:
Windows Explorer, Run a DLL as an App, Registry Checker and Outlook Express!
because those should never access the Internet !(I distrust Outlook Express, never use it till now).
So why of the sudden did they wanted to get out, after my first install of ZoneAlarm?
Those were the keyboard Loggers, trying to load my info to the fuckers computers back !
So block them, with a BIG red V.! LT/

I will post Computer related stuff I find relative important to all Bee's from now on here, in ONLY this thread, so it's easy to find then.
It will get bulky, I promiss you, but no problem, if the Administrators read this, they could take my advice and change the order of multiple pages (Page 1,2,3,4) into Page 4,3,2,1 and then you do have allways the latest info when you open the thread.(Now it opens default with Page 1 !).
IF, and only if you want to look up older info in there, you can click back to older pages.(3,2,1) It's simple (admin), just fill in the UBB software: Reverse (Lookup, Page display), or something like that.

It will greatly add space to the Couch forum, for the social adventures there.
And it will ease life for people who take great risks, to help all of you, they can find everything they want in one thread, and go offline as soon as possible, after collecting what they want for their SAFETY !!! So tracking opportunity for hackers and the likes is much more difficult !!!
After each thread nr.4 is nearly full, I will proceed to another thread PERHAPS (I don't know how many pages can be stored for one thread, but it looks more than 100, so that will do then and we will need only ONE thread for computer stuff. ).
Opinions please? LT/ (Have some more interesting stuff for you all, but first want to settle this, many newbees don't even know the dangers involved).

AnalogX MaxMem, a memory booster similar to RAMbooster
but I actually like the AnalogX version better since it does everything
automatically and has a cool little tray icon that indicates your
current status. It's only about 200 k
and takes a minute to download. Absolutely Free! http://www.webattack.com/freeware/surfing/fwsyspeed.shtml

I added a new category for System Accelerators to keep the separate
from the Browser Acceleration. All the MTU tweaking stuff etc. is now
in there, you'll see it when you click on
the link above or below.
I have been using MaxMem together with "Superfassst" for the past 24
hours and it really seems to produce a faster system, windows open a
bit faster, menus flash up in no time
etc. Superfassst is a system optimizer, like Norton Speed Start but has
some more options and tweaks. They actually got a patent on the thing.
It's free and you can get it from http://www.webattack.com/freeware/surfing/fwsyspeed.shtml

iMarkup Plus is a really cool tool that will actually let you annotate
web pages. You can stick a little note on them,
highlight text or even draw on them with a paint brush.
No need to save them or anything, you can do it right from IE, just
open the iMarkup explorer bar, pick sticky note
and paste it right on the web page. Great if you are doing research or
analyzing web sites. Give it a try, you'll be amazed. http://www.webattack.com/shareware/surfing/fwbrowson.shtml

If you are using a single phone line for your computer and your home
phone, check out Pagoo. It will let you take messages while you are
online, no more busy signal. The message will be played immediately
just like a real answering machine.
You can even get your message with any web browser or forward them by
e-mail. Similar to the free
Internet Answering Machine but with more features and no
advertising to display. http://www.webattack.com/shareware/comm/swmisccomm.shtml

If you like to work with graphics, check out "Terragen"
and create photorealistic landscapes. It is free software but still in
developement, expect it to be shareware at some point. It'll take you
only about an hour to figure out most of the programs features and you
can create some excellent
landscape scenes built from your own imagination. http://www.webattack.com/freeware/gmm/fwgraphicedit.shtml

SpeedTec modifies the Internet Protocol settings in the Windows

of data through your modem.

You probably heard of the ongoing attacks at Yahoo, eBay
etc...Latest news is that they have traced two of the sources to
universities that were of course innocent andsimply used by the hackers
as a "power source". It seems as if the hackers are quiet a bit more
sophisticated then they initially believed.

This weeks Highlight in the freeware section is "iSpeed"
You can use it to tweak your registry settings and try to get a better
connection speed with your modem. It is completely safe, you can restore
your defaults at any time, and even comes with a built in speed tester,
history tracker and statistic graphs.
http://www.webattack.com/freeware/
Also, check out "GIF MovieGear" in the shareware section,
I've been using it for 2 years, creating all my animations including
the WebAttack buttons etc. Very nice, and affordable. http://www.webattack.com/shareware/

Highlight your keywords..
-----------------------
KeywordSeeker is a little tool, that let's you keep a
list of keywords that you often look for on web sites, articles etc.
When you drag it's tray icon onto the page it will search the page for
you and highlight all occurrences of the specified keywords... It's not
something you'd use every time, but I found it to be pretty handy and
original. http://www.webattack.com/freeware/searchtools/fwsearch.shtml

Power Bookmarklets...
------------------------
Bookmarklets are interactive browser bookmarks, written in Java script,
that can add some powerful helper tools to your browser. They are the
brainchild of bookmarklets.com, and they are free. I liked them so much
that I created a .exe version with some of the best tools for IE,
compiled it so that it automatically installs in your favorite folder,
grouped in 4 categories. Check it out... http://www.webattack.com/freeware/surfing/fwbrowson.shtml

Make thumbnails...
------------------------
A great tool for everybody that publishes graphics or works with image
collections. You can batch resize, rename and more. Create complete
image collections for the web etc. http://www.webattack.com/freeware/gmm/fwgraphictools.shtml

SignPoster takes its name from SignPosts and SignPosting is its core
feature. SignPosts are special 'gateways' to your web pages(s), HTML
pages of their own which contain enhanced meta-information and page
structures, including things like IMGALT text, commented text and
headers. These SignPosts generally appear much higher up search engines
and therefore bring in more traffic to your page(s).

LaBTop: regarding your post in the thread Cracking on the hive couch on 2-07-00.
Don't you want the tamos proxy checker to report proxy not discovered even when you are using a proxy. If it reports this but still gives the environmental stats of your proxy, then you've fooled it. The best proxy would show the Remote Address and Remote Host numbers of the proxy, not yours, but would still not be discovered. If it is discovered, that would mean that though you've successfully hidden your own IP, you've sort of announced that your hiding it. You, I believe , want a proxy that will hide your information, but not announce that it's hiding it. I've checked some of these proxy pages:
www.lightspeed.de/irc4all/eindex.htm
mylad.newmail.ru/proxies.htm
proxys4all.cginet/web-based.shtml
cavency.virtualave.net/proxy/
and this is how I understand it.
P.S. I posted in this forum because this is really addressed to you rather than the couch in general and, also, I'm afraid android might hut me.
P.P.S. Thank You very much for the free security software. I just installed ZoneAlert. I'm always interested in your computer security posts.

This info, Mickey Mouse, is VERY much appreciated, specially because I just relocated myself.
I am now totally non-transparent, which I was not before. I had all the time one tiny little loophole, which is now stopped.
Thanks very much.
Everybody who is concerned about his safety, should click the first URL from MM, and study all possibilities. You will find at least one, which will work even faster then your old proxy.
Change your proxy address in IE98 Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Settings to the new found one, and ev. change the portnumber.
Then you click Properties/Server Types/TCP/IP Settings and you click On:
Server assigned IP address and
Server assigned name server addresses.
Don't fill in any numbers, click 4x OK, and :
Check it then with EnvCheck (you can reach this by clicking on the word envcheck on the proxy page from lightspeed.
Then you are totally non-transparent, and envcheck will show the IP nr from your new proxy, and the rest of the fields are ALL empty! This means that your real IP nr is not traceable anymore. LT/

PS: This will be such good info, also for mr. Android, that he will not even think to hunt you at the couch. Thanks again!

Mickey, your understanding is correct.

The best proxies will cause the Tamos site to say "Proxy Server NOT detected."

Lesser (but still semi-okay) proxies will cause the Tamos site to say "Proxy Server detected.", but even so, they will NOT REVEAL the originating IP address (ie., yours!). This kind of proxy reveals nothing about who you are really, but it does reveal that you're going through a proxy.

The worst proxies are the ones that cause the Tamos site to say, "Proxy Server detected.", AND THEY ALSO reveal your originating IP address in any of these key fields: "Remote Addr", "Remote Host", and "HTTP Referer". Why do they have proxies like this that serve no apparant purpose? I don't know.

Anyone know how to Telnet through a proxy? I could search or figure this out myself if I have to. And that's exactly what I'll do if none of you 'l33t haX0r pH33r-m0nGeRs answers me...

Glad I could be of help.
A warning to any bees who think that they can take the easy way out on this. Proxymate offers a nice little proxy for free that can be easily made to function with your browser as a default proxy. DO NOT USE IT!!! Lucent Technologies which owns proxymate also is a major government contractor with the NSA and other 3 letter agencies. It is thought by many to simply be an arm of Echelon. If you don't know what echelon is go here:
www.aclu.org/echelonwatch.html

mickey_mouse made the sad mistake of using proxymate as his proxy in his first two posts to the hive
As soon as mickey_mouse secures his computer to his satisfaction he will no longer be using that name (he does not nor will he ever again use proxymate!).
Here is a list of more privacy/security links (I'm going to include some that I listed before but formatted wrong):

Clean System Directory:
This is a program for experienced users which
scans your system looking for all references to DLL files in yourWindows system directory. Those DLL files in the system directory that have no programs calling on them can be moved out of the system directory, saving disk space and improving
system performance. http://www.ozemail.com.au/~kevsol/sware.html http://www.ozemail.com.au/~kevsol/clnsysdr.zip

Tip of the Week:
You can hide any file on your computer by simply right clicking on it and select "Properties". From the attribute menu, select "hidden" and press "OK".
To view your hidden files, go to MyComputer/Options/View and select "Show All". Of course this is not a totally safe
way to hide confidential stuff, but a quick and easy way to either hide something or just get it out of the way.

I got the zone alarm fire wall from yourr post a while back and I've tested it over and overrrrr. I really like it a lot.
Itis about the easiest and most secure addition to my programs I've got.
Keep up the good work!
